Sequel Spring • Round-Up #7 & Wrap-Up

Wrap-up first!

Summer started and with that Sequel Spring ends. Ren and I had a lovely time and it was great to see all the books that were read by you guys! Thank you very very much for joining us. We hope you enjoyed it as well, despite the bumps in the road due to our newbieness, and we hope you managed to read all the sequels you wanted to read. :D Ren and I both managed to reach our goals (Ren surpassed hers, of course) and we’re both terribly pleased not just with ourselves but also with your insane participation! Again, thank you very much.

Here are some closing stats from Ren:

  • 18 people signed up for Sequel Spring!
  • As far as the choice of books goes, there were literally a hundred different series in the linky. Most people read a bunch of different things and only a couple of books from the same series, though a few people did read half a dozen books from the same series.
  • Cozies, romance and YA were popular genres, but there was also quite a bit of fantasy and paranormal in the mix.
  • Divergent, The Hunger Games and The Selection were all popular series, appearing on multiple people’s lists.
  • The single most-read book was Night Broken, the 8th Mercy Thompson book, which came out in March: at least 3 people read and reviewed it!
  • A grand total of 145 reviews were posted to our linky!
  • But the number of sequels read was even greater than that! We estimate that our participants read between 250 and 300 sequels in the past three months.
  • The average participant read 15 sequels for this challenge. That’s 5 sequels in a month, or 1 sequel every 6 days! Way to clean up those reading lists, ladies (and gentleman)!
  • Obviously those are just averages. Some people read 2 books for the challenge, others read 57! Either way, we hope you had fun with it and got to read some good books in the process.

And with that we shall close up the post with one last round-up. There are 19 more sequels, bringing our total to 145!

Sequel Spring
Sequel Spring started on Thursday! We hope you’re all dusting off your unread sequels and cracking down on them. If you haven’t heard of Sequel Spring before, you should check out our Sequel Spring Challenge post, where we challenge ourselves to catch up on all the unread sequels we have lying around. Ten people have already joined me and Ren but there’s always room for more!

We’ve had a few questions about the rules, so here’s some clarifications:

  • (NEW) You can read multiple sequels from the same series. For example if you read all 7 Harry Potter books this spring, you can count 6 of them for Sequel Spring (all books minus the first one).
  • (NEW) Books should be at least 50 pages long to count. If you’re reading ebooks, you can check the page count on bookseller sites like Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, etc. Short stories are okay, as long as they’re not too short!
  • (NEW) You don’t have to review all the books you read — you can write no reviews at all if you like, this challenge is all about reading. But if you do write reviews of your Sequel Spring books, there will be a linky to collect all reviews in the progress posts.

If you have more questions or suggestions, leave us a comment! It’s our first challenge and we’re still trying to figure out what works best.

If you’re already participating, you can submit your finished Sequel Spring reviews in the linky below (we apologise for taking you off-site, but free wordpress does not allow javascript, alas):

To finish off this post, we’re curious: how many sequels are in your general TBR pile? from how many different series? and how long have they been sitting there?

Sequel Spring • March 20th-June 20th Reading Challenge

Sequel Spring Series! We love reading books in a series. There’s something about getting to know a character over several books and reading more of their adventures. However, unfortunately, sequels have a tendency to take over one’s TBR list. You read the first book in a series and enjoy very much, but then you realize that the series has been running for years and you have eight more books to add to your reading pile! And you mean to read them, but then you see that your favourite author has just published the first book in a new series, or your friend recommends you this other book that you simply have to read now… You get the picture. So here at Words in a Teacup we’ve decided that it’s time to do some spring cleaning in our TBR list!

The rules

  • This challenge will run from the beginning to the end of spring: March 20th to June 20th 2014.
  • The goal is to read as many sequels as possible.
  • You can join whenever you want and you can read as many (or as few) sequels as you want.
  • A “sequel” is any book that is part of a series, apart from the first one. So prequels and midquels would also count. Anything goes, the only restriction is no standalone novels and no first books in a series.
  • If you start a new series during the challenge period, the second (and third, and fourth…) book in that series will count for Sequel Spring.
  • You can read multiple sequels from the same series. For example if you read all 7 Harry Potter books this spring, you can count 6 of them for Sequel Spring (all books minus the first one).
  • Books should be at least 50 pages long to count. If you’re reading ebooks, you can check the page count on bookseller sites like Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, etc. Short stories are okay, as long as they’re not too short!
  • Books read for other challenges also count. Audiobooks also count.
  • You don’t have to review all the books you read — you can write no reviews at all if you like, this challenge is all about reading. But if you do write reviews of your Sequel Spring books, there will be a linky to collect all reviews in the progress posts.
  • You don’t need a blog to participate. If you’re not a blogger you can link to your Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing, Tumblr, Facebook… anything!
  • If you have a blog, it’d be cool if you created a challenge page, or grab a button and link back.

Words in a Teacup is a tiny new blog so it’s very possible that it’ll be just Isa and Ren doing the challenge, but we thought it might be fun to try and get other people to join us. We’ll be making a post every couple of weeks to keep track of our progress and if other people join we’d love to link to our favourite Sequel Spring reviews.
